GAMA announces new purpose statement

During the Annual Meeting at Origins 2008, Anthony Gallela, GAMA’s executive director, presented GAMA’s new purpose statement to accompany the association’s mission statement. Many people provided input into the statement, including the GAMA staff, both the main board and the GAMA Retail Division (GRD) board, and many dedicated GAMA volunteers. The main board voted on the statement and adopted it for the organization.

GAMA’s new purpose statement reads: “The Game Manufacturers Association (GAMA) is the non-profit trade organization dedicated to serving the tabletop game industry. GAMA strengthens and supports all industry professionals by advancing their interests, providing educational programs and opportunities, and promoting our unique form of quality social entertainment.”

GAMA’s accompanying mission statement says: “Led by publishers and manufacturers, GAMA promotes the interests of all persons involved in the commerce of games and game-related products.”

“A mission statement tells you what you are going to do. A purpose statements tells you why you are doing it,” said Gallela. “Without a purpose statement, it’s hard to decide what things the organization should do because you only see half of the vision.”

“For many years, GAMA operated without a purpose statement, without expressing the ‘why’ behind our mission. With this purpose statement, GAMA takes yet another step toward becoming a truly professional and forward-thinking trade organization,” Gallela said.
